Looks like one of my Raptor hard drives on the stripe is going bad and I had to nuke C: yesterday.  Fortunately all my data is split between two further hard drives so all that goes is the OS and some games.  Of course that means installing something every time you go to print/read a pdf/edit an image and so on for the next few weeks.

If the hard drive does go pop, I think it's time for RAID 5 and Win7.

In the mean time, here's a little  tip:

Poor network performance an Vista can be improved by disabling Vista’s “Auto Tuning” feature with a simple command line prompt, though you need to run in Elevated mode.  Start button > type "com" > right click Command Prompt and select “Run as Administrator.” Type the following at the prompt:

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

Instant performance...

Personally I find all the hate piled on Vista and the love thrown at Win7 laughable given that the later is based on the former with various tweaks and graphical changes and little else.  I'm as interested as the next person in performance, and in this test, Vista wins, albeit by the tiniest of fractions...

It's really nice to see, because for someone like me who upgrades their computer so often with just minor upgrades such as a new CPU, more RAM, faster graphics card etc. your system never feels like new again. With a new operating system, though, it's like starting fresh.

Would you like to know more?
